Halloween is the scariest night of the year, but for one family of Colorado Springs, it became a nightmare. They were bringing their four-year-old daughter trick-or-treating in broad daylight when they were hit by a reckless driver. The couple suffered severe but not life-threatening head and body injuries.
The father, 30, and his wife, 31, were pulling their daughter in a wagon across the street, and they were confident they had the right of way.
“Our little girl named the crossing guy Casper. She said ‘Casper’s on.’ I saw it and started heading across,” the dad told 11 News.
But driver, 22, wasn’t paying attention to “Casper.” She didn’t have an arrow to turn left, but the light was green and she began to turn anyway.
The two parents tried to get her attention, waving frantically at the driver until it was clear she wasn’t going to stop. Their parental instincts kicked in immediately.
“Our mind was stuck on one thing: her,” the mother told 11 News.
The dad pushed their daughter’s wagon out of the way just in time as the drivers’ Oldsmobile hit the couple.
“I got thrown out of my shoes and went over the car,” he told 11 News. “The next thing I know is I’m in the ambulance.”
The Gazette reported that the parents were taken to Memorial Hospital, where 11 News said they were treated for injuries – he for his concussions, she for her injured leg, which was broken in two places. She will not be able to work for at least three months.
As her parents were rushed to the hospital, the family’s daughter stood on the street corner watching, still clad in her Cinderella costume. The girl’s grandmother arrived to take her to the hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries and released.
With the mother’s injuries preventing her from work, the family may need help dealing with ambulance bills and medical expenses.
