Inflatable Slide is Recalled After Causing the Death of Colorado Woman

Despite the best efforts of organizations like the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), some defective products still manage to make it into Southern Colorado homes or in a recent case… their backyards.

As the summer months approach and the days get hotter, Coloradoans turn to their pools to cool off, and the Banzai Splash inflatable slide offered consumers a speedy entry into their in-ground pools. By hooking a common garden hose to it, the slide would inflate and shower water on riders as they shot down it and splashed into their pool.

But the fun didn’t last, as the CPSC has recalled the product after it’s caused multiple serious injuries and the death of Colorado woman.

The bottoms of the slides were found to deflate, leaving swimmers vulnerable to the hard concrete lips of their in-ground pools. This dangerous defect killed a 29-year-old Colorado woman when she broke her neck after her head violently hit the ground beneath the partially deflated slide.

The Colorado death wasn’t the only injury stemming from the flawed product. Another woman in Pennsylvania also broke her neck on the slide but fortunately survived, and a Missouri man was left paralyzed from the neck down after his own accident on the slide.

21,000 of the Banzai Splash slides, manufactured in China by Manley Toys, have been recalled. The slides were carried by Wal-Mart and Toys ‘R’ Us but haven’t been sold in stores since 2009. Residents of Southern Colorado and across the country are urged to take the slides out of their backyard and back to the store for a refund.

The CPSC’s recall points to the fact that the slides didn’t carry sufficient warnings to caution consumers of the potential dangers of deflation. So far no product liability lawsuits have been filed.
