Streets Shut Down After Trailer Pulls Down Utility Poles

Tractor trailers are constantly driving along the streets around Colorado Springs, and one thing is for sure – they’re massive. They can weigh up to 80,000lbs and single trailers can be nearly 60 feet in length while double trailers can be as long as 113 feet. But another factor that can’t be overlooked is the height of these behemoths. Trailers are commonly 13’6” tall, and this height can be just as dangerous as the weight and length. A truck accident in Colorado Springs last Wednesday was a prime example.

A man driving a semi-truck later told police that he didn’t think he could make the narrow turn onto Fillmore Street and decided to cut through a parking lot instead. In doing so, his trailer got snagged on overhead lines and pulled down three utility poles.

Emergency crews soon arrived and in response closed East Fillmore Street at Prospect Street. They worked quickly to shut off electricity to the area as a precaution. The lines were ultimately found to not be electric, so no power shortages were reported in the area. No one was injured in the incident, but the truck driver was ultimately cited for ‘driving off of an approved truck route.’
