As Colorado Springs personal injury lawyers that frequently deal with the aftermath of serious car accidents, we know how troubling the experience can be. The ensuing bills and painful recovery can be overwhelming, but often times the accident can be incredibly traumatizing itself. When you’re involved in a major car collision walking away from the wreck might not be an option. In fact, you might not be able to get out of your vehicle at all.
Last Monday, Colorado Springs was the setting for a serious two-car collision. A young woman ran a red light and t-boned another vehicle. If that wasn’t bad enough, the young woman’s car was so mangled that she found herself trapped inside. But, fortunately, fast-acting emergency crews were able to cut through her car and rescue her from the wreckage. This is by no means a simple task. So, what’s involved when a person has to be freed from a destroyed vehicle?
When pieces of a vehicle are removed to free an accident victim it’s called ‘vehicle extrication.’ The first step before any tools are brought in is to secure the accident scene. The worst thing that can happen is for another accident to occur on top of the first. Once it’s safe to proceed the accident victim is assessed by a medical rescuer who checks for the extent of their injuries. Next is a process called ‘cribbing’ which is the securing of the vehicle to make sure that it doesn’t shift or move suddenly and cause either further harm to the victim or to the rescue workers themselves.
Now that everyone and everything is stabilized the crews can get to work. If the car’s damage is severe enough, the crews brings in hydraulic tools or the ‘jaws of life.’ This tool can remove stuck doors or even entire roofs giving emergency responders the space they need to safely remove the accident victim where they can hopefully give them the medical treatment they need to go on to drive another day.
