Snow plow involved in El Paso car wreck

Colorado Springs Police Department Goes on ‘Accident Alert’

The snow and ice is definitely here in Southern Colorado.  The roads are becoming dangerous and the Colorado Springs Police Department is officially on ‘Accident Alert.’  That means as long as the accident is minor and doesn’t involve drugs or alcohol you can file a cold report.

There are three main conditions for which cold reporting can apply.  The first is if the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has officially announced an ‘Accident Alert,’ if the accident was on private property, or if there is less than $1000 worth of total damage to all vehicles involved.

Other criteria must also be met.  No one involved in the wreck can be hurt or killed.  Alcohol and drugs cannot be involved.  The wreck could not have damaged any public property like utility poles or road signs.  And finally, all drivers involved must remain at the scene and agree to exchange vehicle and insurance information.  If all conditions are met you are able to file your report online or through the mail.

If the accident is more severe, however, you still need to contact the appropriate emergency officials.  Local law enforcement knows that accidents are going to continue to trend upward so they’ve also issued some helpful tips.  These include keeping your seatbelt on after the accident in case you’re struck by another vehicle and staying a good distance away from the road once you’re able to safely exit and wait for authorities.
