Colorado Springs truck accident

Spilled Load Reminds Us of the Dangers of Big Trucks

Colorado Springs motorists don’t have to think back very far to remember how much chaos follows a truck accident.  At the end of last month, a tractor trailer rolled onto its side and spilled hundreds of pipes across Interstate 25.

Many motorists were stuck waiting for well over two hours after the semi-truck carrying large, blue PVC pipes wrecked.  It’s believed that the truck tried to round a curve when it lost control.  The pipes were scattered across both northbound and southbound lanes and damaged several cars.  Some of the pipes weighed over 200 pounds and were bouncing around the highway at speeds close to 50 mph.  According to one man whose car slammed into the debris, “I just pretty much jumped over the first pipe and rode about five or six more about 100 feet.”

Emergency crews that responded to the massive truck accident may have been shocked by the amount of spilt debris, but they weren’t surprised by the accident itself.  That curve on I-25 has a history of being a problem area.  The tight curve coupled with high speeds has made it a spot where big, top-heavy commercial trucks often find themselves on their sides.

The truck driver was hurt in the wreck and had to be taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries.  Considering the sheer magnitude of the accident and how much chaos it caused, the outcome could have been much worse.
