While most people know workers’ compensation should cover injuries sustained while on the job, sometimes people do not fully understand what workers’ compensation covers or what they need to do to make sure they enjoy the full benefits of it. If you have been injured on the job, we encourage you to avoid these four workers’ compensation mistakes.

Not Reporting It

If you are hurt on the job, you should report your injury to your employer right away. A written report of the injury should be submitted within four working days of the injury. It is important to know that you should still report your injury, even if you report it after those four days. While you may lose some benefits, reporting it allows you to get at least some compensation.

Even if your injuries did not result in you having to take time off of work or if you only missed a few hours, you should report your injury. While you will not get compensation for missed work days, you can get compensation for other medical expenses.

Not Going to the Right Doctor

Generally, there are specific providers included on a list. These are the only doctors you can visit if you want to be covered under workers’ compensation insurance. Visiting another provider could result in you not being covered. To ensure you receive the full benefits of your workers’ compensation, you must only see doctors on the approved list.

It is also important that you do not quit going to appointments. If you stop going to appointments, it could be seen as a sign that you are avoiding being authorized to go back to work, and you could lose your benefits.

Not Providing Full Information

If your workers’ comp claim does not include the full story, the insurance adjuster may not have enough information to determine the extent of your claim. Without enough information, your claim might be denied. Explain in detail what happened, but do not exaggerate the details.

Not Hiring a Lawyer

Even if you think you understand workers’ compensation or your employer has assured you that your claim will be handled correctly, you could be missing out on benefits if you try to handle things on your own. Pueblo workers’ comp lawyers can help you understand your benefits and can help you get the full extent of the workers’ compensation benefits you deserve.
