What Are Colorado’s “Move Over” Laws?

A Colorado Car Accident Lawyer Can Assist You with Your Legal Claim

Motor vehicle accidents can leave permanent injuries and even result in death. There were 558 fatal crashes and 608 fatalities in Colorado in 2018, according to Safer America.

Traffic laws are enforced to keep motorists safe while behind the wheel of their vehicle. However, when drivers fail to comply with the laws, it can create hazardous roadways and lead to fatal accidents. The state has faced a consistent issue with drivers failing to obey the “move over” law, implemented in 2005.

If you or a loved one sustained injuries due to an automobile accident, our Colorado car accident lawyers at Heuser & Heuser can seek justice on your behalf and help you receive the compensation you rightfully deserve. Car crashes can have a life-changing impact on the victim and their family. Our attorneys wholeheartedly believe that if you suffered injuries as a consequence of someone else’s negligent behavior, you deserve compensation for what you experienced.

What is the “Move Over” Law?

The move over law orders all motorists to change lanes or slow down when approaching any stationary emergency or maintenance vehicles with their lights flashing. This can include police, road maintenance vehicles, tow-trucks, and emergency personnel.

The law is intended to ensure the safety of those operating these types of vehicles. Yet, numerous people fail to obey the law and, instead, don’t change lanes or slow down.

Should I File a Lawsuit?

A significant amount of people don’t file lawsuits after an auto accident, because they are unsure if their case is worth pursuing. In order to determine if you have a case, it’s in your best interest to solicit legal advice.

Whether or not you are eligible to receive compensation is determined by multiple factors. For example, the severity of your injuries and the overall medical treatment necessary for recovery are evaluated to determine if you are qualified to obtain compensation.

Filing a lawsuit can be strenuous and time-consuming, however, when you contact one of our Colorado car accident lawyers, you can concentrate on recovering while we take care of the rest.

Save Lives and Move Over

It’s imperative to implement safety every single time you’re behind the wheel of your vehicle. One of the ways you can help save lives is abiding by the move over law.

Our emergency responders, maintenance workers, and towers deserve to be safe while working. The next time you are approaching one of these vehicles with their lights on, make sure to change lanes. However, in some circumstances, it can be difficult to change lanes. If you’re unable to move over, slow down and pay close attention to the road.

If you are capable of moving over, change lanes and decrease your speed. Even when you shift lanes, it’s still important to drive slowly and watch your surroundings. If you obey this law, you will help protect the lives of those who serve our community.

A New Camera System Could Ticket You for Failure to Obey the Law

A new camera system created by Brekford Traffic Safety could ticket drivers who do not follow the move over law. The camera is installed on emergency vehicles and issues tickets or a warning to drivers who fail to obey the traffic law. Rod Hillman, Brekford’s president, said, “Essentially it’s a combination of radar and high-resolution cameras that identify, capture and record and transmit move over violations.”
