Yes, a car accident can cause a herniated disc. The force of a collision can damage the outer layer of a disc in your back, allowing the softer inner part to push out and press on nearby nerves. A herniated disc is often a painful and debilitating injury.
While some people improve through rest and physical therapy, others may require injections or surgery. Insurance companies may question whether your injury was caused by the accident. It is helpful to consult with a personal injury lawyer.
If you’ve been hurt in a crash, our car accident lawyers in Colorado Springs can help. Heuser & Heuser, LLP, has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars for injured accident victims. Call today to schedule your free consultation and tell us about your herniated disc injury.
How a Car Accident Can Injure a Spinal Disc
A vehicle collision can subject the body to tremendous forces in a matter of seconds. When the spine is suddenly twisted, compressed, or jolted, one or more of the discs between the vertebrae may become damaged.
If the outer layer of the disc tears or becomes weak, its inner material can protrude and press against surrounding nerves. Even a minor impact can cause harm.
While the human spine is strong, it isn’t designed to withstand the sudden energy of a car collision. Our attorneys at Heuser & Heuser, LLP, know how these injuries occur and how to explain them.

Common Symptoms of a Herniated Disc After a Crash
Your herniated disc symptoms will depend on where your injury is on your spine and which nerves are affected. You might feel pain right away, or it could get increasingly worse over the days that follow your crash. The signs of an injury can appear in various ways:
- A herniated disc can cause pain that travels from the spine into the shoulder, arm, hip, or leg.
- You may experience pins-and-needles sensations or reduced feeling in your arm, hand, leg, or foot.
- A herniated disc may also cause weakness that makes it difficult to stand, walk, lift objects, or use your hands normally.
- Some people experience pain that becomes more noticeable when sitting, bending, coughing, sneezing, or moving.
Don’t ignore symptoms or pain. Getting medical care as soon as possible after your accident can establish a formal diagnosis and get you on track to recovery. It also creates a record of your injury that may serve as evidence our team at Heuser & Heuser, LLP, can use later on.
Treatment Options and Recovery
Initial treatment often focuses on alleviating pain and reducing swelling. Physical therapy may also be used to help the muscles supporting the spine become stronger.
In some situations, surgery may become necessary. This is more likely when a herniated disc continues to place significant pressure on a nerve.
Your recovery time depends on the severity of the injury and how the body responds to treatment. Our team at Heuser & Heuser, LLP, will stand by you throughout your recovery and help you understand what steps you should take after a car accident.

Proving the Crash Caused Your Herniated Disc
A diagnosis alone will not establish responsibility in a personal injury claim. You will need to demonstrate that the collision was the event that produced or aggravated the disc injury. This becomes especially important if an insurer claims your condition existed before the crash.
Your medical records from before the crash can help prove that you didn’t have a prior injury. A medical opinion carries weight with an insurance adjuster or a jury. Our attorneys at Heuser & Heuser, LLP, can connect you with trusted doctors in our network if necessary.

Compensation for a Herniated Disc Injury
A herniated disc can affect your finances and your quality of life long after an accident. If another party caused your injury, Colorado law allows you to seek compensation for the losses you have suffered.
- You may be entitled to compensation for the medical treatment you have already received.
- Your claim may also account for medical care that you are expected to need in the future.
- You may recover lost wages if your injury prevents you from working.
- If the injury affects your ability to earn the same income in the future, you may also be entitled to compensation for diminished earning capacity.
- The pain and suffering associated with a serious injury may also be compensable.
Every personal injury case is different. The value of a claim depends on the severity of the injury and the losses it has caused. Heuser & Heuser, LLP, will evaluate your damages and seek the full compensation you are entitled to.
