To report a car accident in Colorado, call 911, give an official statement to the responding officer, and notify your insurance company as soon as possible. State law requires drivers to report any crash that involves injury, death, or more than $1,000 in property damage. Failing to report can lead to fines, license suspension, and problems with your insurance claim later on.
Reporting the accident also protects your health, creates an official record of what happened, and gives your attorney something to build a case around. Our Colorado Springs car accident lawyers at Heuser & Heuser, LLP, can answer any questions you have about reporting a crash and fight for the damages you’re owed.
Let’s take a closer look at how to report a car accident in Colorado and how a lawyer can help you after a collision.
Call 911 and Get Officers to the Scene
The first thing you should do after any car accident is call 911. If anyone is hurt, paramedics will respond and provide emergency care. Police or sheriff’s deputies will also come to document what happened and assist with a report.
The police report is also the official record your insurance company and your attorney from Heuser & Heuser, LLP, will rely on to determine what happened and who may be at fault.
You must stay at the scene until officers arrive. Leaving before an accident is properly reported can be charged as a hit-and-run under Colorado law, even if you weren’t at fault. If the other driver tries to pressure you into handling things without police involvement, don’t, as it could cause serious problems down the road.

Collect Information and Document the Scene
While you wait for officers, gather as much information as you can. Exchange names, phone numbers, insurance details, and license plate numbers with every driver involved. You should also get the names and phone numbers of anyone who witnessed the accident before they leave.
You’ll also want to take photos of the vehicles, the road, any skid marks, traffic signs, and any visible injuries you’ve suffered. When the responding officer finishes the report, ask for the report number and the officer’s name so you can request a copy later.
The more documentation you leave the scene with, the easier it will be to report the car accident and build a strong claim. The attorneys at Heuser & Heuser, LLP, can use the information you gather to support your case and pursue the damages you require.
Notify Your Insurance Company and Seek Medical Care
Reporting a car accident in Colorado also involves contacting your insurer and seeking medical treatment. Call your insurance company as soon as possible after the accident. Most policies require prompt notice of a crash, and waiting too long can give the insurer grounds to deny part of your claim. Provide your insurer with the time, location, and vehicles involved.
You should also get medical attention right away, even if you feel fine. Some injuries, including concussions and soft tissue damage, may not show symptoms for hours or even days after a crash. Gaps in treatment can also be used by insurers to reduce your settlement.
Contact Heuser & Heuser, LLP, before you accept any settlement offers from the insurer. We’ll review offers and negotiate for fair compensation.
