A recent car accident in El Paso County is a reminder of the importance of safe driving at intersections. According to early investigation of the accident, an individual driving a Dodge Durango ran a stop sign. The vehicle was then hit by a Chevy sedan. Although six people were taken to an area hospital, no one had life-threatening injuries.

Intersections can be a dangerous place for vehicles to meet if people are not paying attention. The American Safety Council has created a list of tips to help you safely navigate intersections, whether they have stop signs, traffic lights, or other ways to control traffic.

First, look both ways before moving forward. Even if you have the right-of-way, other people may decide to not wait their turn. It is especially important to look to the left, where a proceeding vehicle may cause an immediate danger. Even if it is your turn, do not insist upon taking your turn if doing so would likely result in an accident.

Second, do not assume others will obey traffic signals. Lots of people run red lights and stop signs. This is especially true of impaired and impatient drivers. It is also important to know if the intersection is an all-way stop or if only certain directions have to stop. Even if you can drive through the intersection, do not assume vehicles with a stop sign will give you the right-of-way.

Third, do not assume a light which turns green automatically entitles you to safe navigation of the intersection. Be aware of drivers who may have run the red light to avoid waiting through another light.

Finally, be aware of difficult to see traffic. This includes motorcycles, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

Of course, sometimes even if you are careful, other drivers on the road will cause accidents. If you are involved in a car accident, contact us.
